Reclaim Your New Car Feel

March 7, 2022

When was the last time you were compared to a new car? Well, I guess it’s better to be compared to a new car than a ‘used car’, but anyway, on with the analogy.

On the way home from town the other day my son said that he liked my new car when I got it, I told him thank you and asked if he still liked it. He said he still really did like it, but after 3 or 5 months (I guess not 4 🤷‍♀️), it wasn’t quite as ‘exciting’ as when I first got it. He’d gotten used to the things that made it so unique to start with - and while those things were still good - it didn’t elicit the same awe each time he took a ride now.

I think of our own lives with the same concept. We start something new - a workout program, a new way of eating, we finally tackle a lifelong dream, we pick up a new hobby… like that new car, we get excited when we start off: it’s new and novel - the thrill of it brings that rush we seek…

And then it starts. The fire and drive we first exhibited have turned into more of a flicker of fire that’s paired with a drive idled down to a crawl with a need for intermittent rest.

We lost that "new car feel".

We begin reverting back to old habits of eating in the car and allowing clutter to build up, we don't go through the carwash so often anymore, the once-novel features now are just 'ordinary', we don’t take time to appreciate the things and reasons we first started on this path. The bottom line is that we lose interest and we don’t give it (ourselves) the due diligence we once did.

In our lives, this looks like: getting bored with our new goals, we lose motivation, our focus strays, and we no longer remember WHY we got started in the first place. Some of these WHYS are things like: becoming healthier, gaining more energy, being more decisive, having focus and clarity, feeling like you’re living your purpose, and being motivated to crush your goals. (What’s YOUR why?)

And just like that, we’re back to square one - or maybe it even feels like a negative one at this point. It’s frustrating when we get an idea, we are so excited to implement it, then we actually start!

And then it quickly - or maybe not so quickly - changes. Even with the best of intentions, we still can’t get past ourselves and we fail. Again.

There can be a LOT of reasons our tires lose their shine, but it’s important we do what we can to restore that new car look, feel, and smell (that sounds weird in this context, but you totally know what I mean).

Doing something is better than doing nothing at all, it’s time to get started.

Enjoy the opportunity for self-care - clean out your car, do a regular car wash, spit shine that leather, vacuum often, and even go visit a detailer once in a while for that super-deep clean. I’ll leave it up to you to translate this into your own self-care practices and your own ways to re-energize your passion.

Don't lose your new car excitement - stay passionate and take care of yourself - and even when you become a "classic car" - that care and attention is just as important ;)

With Love,

Brianne
